Everything you need to set up your kitten's life in the South Bay.
Getting a kitten is a lot. Getting a kitten while also trying to figure out which vet takes new patients, when to schedule grooming care, and who you're supposed to call at 12am when something goes wrong… well, that's a different beast entirely.
And given the chaotic nature of kitten parenthood, I’m creating this guide for those of us who don't actually have the time to spend three hours cross-referencing a million and one Yelp reviews and Reddit threads. I’ve done that research for you and pulled together the resources that matter most in the early stages: vets, emergency care, low-cost options, rescues, groomers, and sitters. So, let’s get started.
The first thing every new kitten parent needs is a vet. Fortunately, San Jose has plenty of solid options across many price points and neighborhoods.
San Jose Animal Hospital is one of the most recommended general practices in the area, known for a team that takes time to explain what's happening with your pet. Good for routine wellness visits, vaccinations, and the kind of new-kitten-parent questions that feel embarrassing to ask.
West Valley Pet Clinic has been a pet health leader in Silicon Valley for nearly 60 years. The clinic has earned AAHA accreditation and focuses on low-stress, high-quality care. Services include wellness visits, emergencies, dentistry, diagnostics, surgery, therapy, house calls, and acupuncture .
Curtner Pet Clinic & Hospital is also known as the San Jose Animal Hospital on Curtner and is another well-regarded full-service option with a loyal following among longtime South Bay pet parents.
Animal Medical Center San Jose, founded in 1993, is a full-service hospital committed to advanced medical and surgical techniques, including internal medicine, dental care, chronic skin treatment, and advanced diagnostic procedures. They also offer boarding.
Willow Glen Pet Hospital is a full-service animal hospital in the Willow Glen neighborhood that accepts both routine patients and emergency cases which is great if you want a practice that can handle urgent situations too.
Note: San Jose, like much of the Bay Area, has a veterinary access problem. And because of that, practices fill quickly. So, call as soon as you bring your kitten home. Don't wait until you need an appointment to find out you can't get one for three weeks!

Kittens are terrible at self-preservation. Having the emergency vet address in your phone before you need it is one of the best things you can do as a new parent.
VEG San Jose (Veterinary Emergency Group) is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, no appointment needed. Their East San Jose location is accessible from I-880 off Ridder Park Drive.
MedVet Silicon Valley at 7160 Santa Teresa Boulevard provides advanced surgical, medical, neurological, and emergency/critical care for cats and dogs. A second location, MedVet Campbell, is at 905 Dell Avenue in Campbell, just over the San Jose border, and is also open 24/7/365 with no appointment needed.
South Bay Animal Hospital & Emergency at 5188 Moorpark Avenue operates 7am–7pm seven days a week with a DVM on site at all times. They have a full diagnostic lab, X-ray, and on-site radiology available daily. They accept emergency walk-ins but recommend calling ahead with an expected arrival time when possible. Phone lines are open 24 hours.
Write this down to put in a few places like your phone and fridge, so you and your family have it before you need it.
Kittens don't have to break the bank, especially when it comes to spays and neuters.
Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) offers affordable spay and neuter surgeries for healthy cats and dogs. In partnership with several foundations, they currently offer free spay/neuter surgeries for cats, kittens, and small dogs, including family pets and foster animals. Certain San Jose zip codes qualify for free services. Spaces are limited and appointment-only.
San Jose Animal Care Center runs a low-cost spay/neuter clinic operating below cost, open to San Jose residents. Kittens must be at least 12 weeks old and weigh at least 3 pounds. Walk-in service is available for feral cats; owned cats require an appointment. Call (408) 794-7201 or request online.
Silicon Valley Animal Control Authority (SVACA) in Santa Clara operates a low-cost spay/neuter clinic for residents of Campbell, Monte Sereno, and Santa Clara for $10 per cat, typically on Wednesdays by appointment.

Already have your kitten? This section is still worth perusing. Rescue organizations are often the first people to call when you need foster advice, local vet referrals, or help with a stray you've found. And if you're still looking, this is where you should start.
Mini Cat Town is a nonprofit dedicated to rescuing kittens and helping them find forever homes. Their San Jose location is at Eastridge Shopping Center, open daily for admissions and adoptions. No strings attached. You can visit and socialize with the kittens here even if you're not ready to adopt.
The Dancing Cat is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit rescue and adoption lounge near downtown San José, dedicated to saving at-risk cats from the San Jose Animal Care Center. They have cats and kittens available for adoption via an online application.
13th Street Cat Rescue is a no-kill, all-volunteer nonprofit in San Jose focused on cat and kitten adoptions, as well as TNR (trap-neuter-return) for community cats.
Itty Bitty Orphan Kitty Rescue (IBOK) specializes in helping homeless kittens in and around San Jose. They also have fostering opportunities for people who want to help without fully committing to adoption, which is one of the most useful things you can do to help your community.
San Jose Animal Care Center, located at 2750 Monterey Road, is the city's municipal shelter and a good first stop if you're looking for an adult cat or kitten that needs a home quickly.
Silicon Valley Pet Project is a foster-based animal rescue in San Jose saving at-risk shelter pets, with both cat and dog foster programs.
Kittens don't need professional grooming immediately, but getting them comfortable with the experience early makes everything easier later. Long-haired breeds especially benefit from this in preparation for when they mature.
For parents who can’t fit another errand in the list, mobile cat grooming is a growing option in San Jose. Services like GroomIt send a groomer directly to your door, which significantly minimizes cat stress. Good option for kittens who are still getting used to loud noises and new people.
General pet salons like A+ Luxury Dog & Cat Grooming and others in the area offer cat grooming as part of their services, often with separate areas for cats and dogs. I would definitely ask about their separation policy when you call, since a cat-in-the-same-room-as-dogs situation is a big NO.
For nail trims: most vet offices and vet techs will do a quick trim for a small fee or part of a wellness visit. If home nail trimming isn't working yet, this is probably the easiest alternative.
Kittens do best with routine and consistency, especially in the first year. If you travel for work, take vacations, or just have long days, it’s important to a trusted person on hand who your kitten feels comfortable checking in on them while you’re away.
And this is where we come in.
In-home cat care keeps your kitten in their own environment, on their regular feeding and play schedule, with someone checking in on their health and wellbeing. And this sort of thing is perfect for kittens, who are still building both their immunity and sense of security and simply wouldn’t benefit from something like boarding.
At Kristin's Kitty Care we design our services around your kitten's routine. Whether you need a midday visit to keep up with playtime and feeding, daily check-ins while you travel, someone your cat can depend on before you ever need them, we're available throughout San Jose and the South Bay.

Mini Cat Town at Eastridge Mall, The Dancing Cat near downtown San José, 13th Street Cat Rescue, and the San Jose Animal Care Center at 2750 Monterey Road all have kittens available for adoption on a rolling basis. Note that kitten season peaks through spring and summer.
VEG San Jose and United Veterinary Specialty & Emergency are both 24/7 options within San Jose proper. MedVet Silicon Valley (Santa Teresa Blvd) and MedVet Campbell are also 24/7 and serve the South Bay area. Save at least one number in your phone before you need it.
Humane Society Silicon Valley offers free spay/neuter for qualifying zip codes. The San Jose Animal Care Center runs a low-cost clinic for residents. SVACA in Santa Clara serves residents of nearby cities for $10 per cat. Call ahead — all programs are appointment-based and fill quickly.
Call several practices simultaneously rather than waiting on one. San Jose Animal Hospital, West Valley Pet Clinic, Curtner Pet Clinic, and Willow Glen Pet Hospital are all established options worth contacting. If waitlists are long, ask to be added and use HSSV or the Animal Care Center for any immediate needs in the meantime.
Mini Cat Town at Eastridge is the closest equivalent — a kitten adoption lounge you can visit without committing to adoption. The Dancing Cat near downtown also offers a lounge experience. Both are good low-stakes ways to socialize a new kitten to other cats and people.
Kittens under six months do best with check-ins every four to six hours. If you work a full day, a midday visit from a cat sitter helps maintain their feeding schedule, gives them interaction, and catches anything that looks off before it becomes a problem. It also builds a relationship between your cat and a trusted person before you ever need to travel.
Kristin's Kitty Care serves San Jose and the South Bay with in-home cat sitting visits for kittens and cats of all ages. If you're a new kitten parent in San Jose looking for reliable, routine-based care, we'd love to meet you (and your kitten!)
